Long-term conservation and sustainable management of the natural resources in the Gulf of Mottama requires great efforts and constructive cooperation among stakeholders including public, private, academia, civil society organizations and communities.

Collaboration and coordination between Bago and Yangon regionals governments and the Mon state government as well as the support from the union government are significantly important to maintain the Gulf of Mottama as locally and internationally important commercial fisheries reproductive system and other conservation concerned key species.

HELVETAS Myanmar in partner with Network Activities Group (NAG) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) initiated the Gulf of Mottama Project, with the aim to safeguard the unique biodiversity in the Gulf of Mottama and improve the communication resilience and diversify of livelihood opportunities. This project is financed by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) from 2015 to 2024.

The project has been working closely with the state and regional government, academia from local and regional universities, private sectors, civil society organization such as Myanmar Fishery Federation and local communities along the coastal area. Throughout the project, many communication-based organizations such as Fishery Development Association (FDA), Coastal Farmer Development Association (CFDA), Village Development Committee (VDCs) and Local Conservatioin Group (LCG) were formed and empowered them to take leading role in facilitating the multidimenision of community development projects including basic infrastructures, agriculture, fishery management, natural resoure conservation and other activities related to community-based disaster risk management.

These community-based organizations are the main components to the future management of natural resources in the Gulf of Mottama along with multistakeholder from public, private, academic institutions and communication organizations.
